James McGrath

The Sydney Morning Herald - Spectrum Saturday 11 October 2008

The Sydney artist uses complex three-dimensional cloth simulation software to create luxurious unconventional Baroque interiors printed on shiny plexiglass. Shadowy, cream-coloured gargoyles, elaborate plaster mouldings and marble archways look like they have been lifted from a 17th-century masterpiece, but the frescoes are uniquely McGrath. The richly coloured religious murals are warped and folded, as if they have melted off the walls. The artist continues the 17th-century theme in two large oil paintings and a series of silkscreens on aluminium panels.
