'The world's most hopeless art heist': Sydney artist's bushfire relief painting stolen

A celebrated Sydney artist whose still wet painting was stolen from a business in Mascot last week hopes the thief is caught red-handed.
Painter Laura Jones had just finished an 81 x 61cm oil canvas of Australian native flowers that was to be auctioned for bushfire relief when she took it to a business in Mascot to be photographed ahead of the National Art School's Home: Bushfire Relief Art Auction Fundraiser on Wednesday.

John Olsen, Australia’s most revered living artist, unveiled a suite of new works this month at his son’s Olsen Gallery. A formidable presence in the art world for over six decades, Olsen shows little sign of slowing down. Simply titled Recent Works, his new exhibition includes sprawling landscapes, nuanced studies of animal life and intimate paintings based on the artist’s passion for food and cooking. Now 91, Olsen is a painter who has forever changed how Australians see their country and its landscapes. After immersing himself in the art scenes of Paris and Spain, Olsen returned to Australia in 1960 – creating the first of his hugely influential works, based on a unique vision of the outback and its endless flux.

In his ninth decade, John Olsen’s legendary lust for life is as obvious as ever and so is his devotion to drawing, a practice that has underpinned his long and distinguished career. What is also evident when talking with Olsen is that his diverse life experiences have informed his approach to art. Memories of tough times during the Depression in the late 1920s, creative battles of a life spent dedicated to art, and the many wonderful people who have shared his world and great places he has visited are all deeply intertwined through his work. He is still looking outward, projecting what he sees and more importantly celebrating life - just as he did as a young boy growing up in Newcastle, discovering a passion for drawing.

Sydney-born artist Anna-Wili Highfield, who most recently showed her work at the Olsen Gruin Gallery in New York City, is gearing up for her first solo exhibition in an Australian commercial gallery.
The sculptor, who deploys materials like paper and wax to create animal and nature-inspired pieces, will present her exhibition Companions at the Olsen Gallery in Sydney’s Woollahra on Thursday, November 14.
Ahead of the exhibition, Vogue chatted to the artist whose commissions have transcended the art world (Highfield counts luxury fashion and jewellery houses Hermès and Tiffany & Co. as just some of her clients) about her inspirations, her interests in natural phenomena and what she’s working on next.

Bloomberg Philanthropies and Bloomberg Associates have announced the Asphalt Art Initiative; 26 projects from around the world implemented in the past decade, showcasing the variety of successful ways to incorporate artwork on city streets and public infrastructure, including Bo Droga's Miami Dominoes. "My artwork "Miami Dominoes" is a site specific installation that aims at enhancing the concrete infrastructure of the underline metro rail near the University of Miami Metro Rail Station. For thousands of students, locals and visitors, the Rail Station is a critical gateway to access the university, their homes and the local business services, including shops, medical centers and much more. Unfortunately, the heavy concrete structure underneath the railway tracks is a real eye sore. My artwork "Miami Dominoes" offers to transform the concrete pylons into a visually fun, playful and thought provoking installation that celebrates creativity through the method of trompe l?oeil. Turning the concrete pylons into a set of Dominos game pieces, the thematic behind "Miami Dominoes" transcends all ages, all cultural and socio economic backgrounds. Laura swapped the hustle and bustle of Sydney to re-engage her passion for native flowers ahead of exhibiting in Port Macquarie in 2020. Previously a florist, Laura's work has grown from her desire to express a love of nature, the process of painting beginning with the physical act of arranging flowers.
