Mawalan Marika

Mawalan Marika was the senior ceremonial and community leader of the Rirratjingu clan. He was the head of an artistic dynasty that was strongly protective of Yolngu traditional culture and way of life, particularly at the onset of European presence and influences. He and his brother Mathaman were arguably the two most important painters active in the 1950s and 60s in north east Arnhem Land
