Alan Jones’ work explores ideas that surround notions of identity. Embracing diversity, Jones works across a broad spectrum of mediums as he takes a personal approach to subject matter.

Jones’ works often feature self-portraits, images of family members and landscapes of areas of personal significance.

Jones’ maternal family heritage can be traced back to the First Fleet. Jones has spent a number of years exploring locations and characters relevant to his convict heritage, making and exhibiting works both in NSW and in the UK.

More recently, Jones and his young family have settled in Sydney. Jones lives at Coogee beach and has his studio in Alexandria. It is these more immediate surrounds that inspire his current works.

In ‘Painting 142 (Self-portrait in Dunningham Reserve)’ Jones depicts two small black and white heads which themselves can be read as a self-portrait. These heads face inwards to other each, sitting either side of a central self-portrait as Jones explores the idea of selfassessment.

Through his practice, Jones aims to communicate to the viewer the intricacies of human connections and how his own roots subsequently influence his work.
