GEORGE BYRNE | HEAD ON PHOTO FESTIVAL 2017 | LANDSCAPE NSW AWARD WINNER

OLSEN Gallery would like to congratulate George Byrne as the winner of this year's Head On Photo Festival's Landscape NSW Award. Byrne's winning photograph Murwillumbah #1 was taken whilst the artist was in residency on the far north coast of New South Wales in 2016.

"As an artist in residence in December 2016 at a hotel on Cabarita Beach on New South Wales's far north coast. I was struck by the region's raw beauty and moved by the spirituality of Mount Warning as an ancient epicentre of indigenous life. OLSEN gallery would like to congratulate artist Stephen Bird whose painting Man by a Fire has been selected as a finalist?of the Calleen Art Prize at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery. The Calleen Art Award is an acquisitive national painting prize in any subject and style. 2017 marks the 40 year anniversary for the Calleen Art Award and during the past ten years it has developed a unique reputation as a major art prize in regional New South Wales. Fellow OLSEN Gallery artist Peter Gardiner won the prize in 2011 for his painting Landscape 2010 No. VIII (2010). Best known in recent years for her distinctive flower paintings, this year Sydney artist Laura Jones explores emotive new territory.

With an urge to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef's devastating mass bleaching event of 2016, Laura sought out a residency on Lizard Island, and then more recently on Heron Island. Painting in close proximity to the reef, and meeting the dedicated scientists who study it, has inspired a spectacular new series of paintings for Laura.

We talked with Laura ahead of her upcoming exhibition ‘Bleached‘ at Olsen Gallery in Sydney, opening mid-May.

ALAN JONES FOR 'TALKING WITH PAINTERS' | EPISODE #15

Interview with Alan Jones. Alan Jones’ work crosses over painting, sculpture and collage. His most recent show was of exquisite painted wooden collages, many of which depicted the coastal landscape of Moonee Beach in NSW.

With 22 solo shows and over 130 group shows under his belt, Jones has received many awards, including the Kilgour Prize, Mosman Art prize, Paddington Art Prize and Brett Whiteley Travelling Scholarship and has been finalist in many others.  His portraits have been hung in Australia’s prestigious Archibald Prize three times including last year with his portrait of Pat Corrigan.

Artist John Olsen celebrates 89th birthday at Newcastle Art Gallery

ABOUT a year ago, iconic Australian artist John Olsen agreed to create an iconic painting that would capture the essence of his birthplace. 

It was a deeply personal work, a reflection on his beginnings. 

Unfortunately, illness meant he couldn’t be there when the exhibition opened in November last year. 

But on Saturday at Newcastle Art Gallery – just a short distance from his childhood home – Olsen got to share a piece of that work, a slice of the Hunter, with hundreds of other art lovers.
