After the clean and minimal photographs of sunny LA which provided a vibrant glimpse into the urban landscape of California, New York-based gallery Olsen Gruin presents the work of a strikingly different artist. Anna-Wili Highfield‘s Spirit Faces exhibition features mixed media sculptures that create an intriguing collection. Made of a blend of glamorous materials, brass, and spray painting finishes, the intricate artworks draw the viewer closer. Animals and body parts combine in carefully shaped sculptures that often remind of a self-portrait.

Olsen Gruin is currently hosting a solo exhibition by Jens Einhorn, titled "Raw Vision."
The exhibition presents a collection of new collage-paintings by the German artist. Einhorn's body of work reveals his interest in channeling the assertive energy of the urban periphery. His new works incorporate shapes cut from tarpaper, layered starkly above a vibrant collage of fabric, acrylic, and spray paint. Similar to how associating our personal memories gives meaning to others' discarded objects, Einhorn's collages are full of suggestion and opportunity.
Born in 1980, Jens Einhorn graduated from the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf as a Master Student with Professor Tal R. The artist currently lives and works in Berlin.
The exhibition will be on view through February 5, 2018 at Olsen Gruin, 30 Orchard St, New York, NY 10002, USA.

It’s a hard business, and although it’s always sad when one closes (especially after many years serving the neighborhood), when a new one opens, it brings new promise. While 2017 saw the closing of venues like Envoy Enterprises, CRG Gallery, and Sandra Gering Inc., it also witnessed the opening of several brand new galleries in New York City. AUSTRALIAN STORY: Adrenaline Brush: Sophie Cape
2017Described as more like a “rock star” than a painter, Sophie Cape never wanted to be an artist.
A former elite athlete, she was destined for the Olympic Games in two separate sports — first as a downhill ski racer and then as a track cyclist — but her sporting career was shattered after suffering catastrophic injury and undergoing controversial “experimental” body-modification surgery intended to ease her pain and help her performance.
Left physically and psychologically traumatised, Sophie Cape then transformed herself into one of Australia’s most celebrated young artists. It’s a profession she has long resisted, as both her mother Ann Cape and her grandmother the late Gwenna Welch are highly regarded artists. But now Sophie Cape has no doubt about becoming the third generation artist in her family: “Art saved me.”

an Jones – the artist, not the shock jock – squeezes paint out of a tube, mixes it with water, and lifts a fat, unwieldy brush to the wall. We are in Potts Point, Sydney, and Jones is making a mural inside the hallowed Yellow House.
He is not alone. Generating music that feeds his rhythm is a live quartet; watching him is a small audience; and, arched over a black plinth, long dark hair cascading down her bare back, is a naked muse.
I am at the opening night of the Sydney Art Quartet’s Butt Naked Salon II, a re-working of the same concept first launched last year, inspired by the salons in the Belle Époque period in Paris.

Wilpena Pound is an amphitheatre of mountains in South Australia's Flinders Ranges National Park. Nicholas Harding describes his response to working from this landscape: 'Reflected sky pooling in stream water. Wattle blooms amongst bark and bough. Bleaching light refracted through twigs and leaves. Birdsong and insect buzz.
"John's irrepressible joie de vivre, in both his personality and work, was something I wanted to paint. This request was politely denied," says Harding. "Last year, however, after painting Tim for a National Portrait Gallery exhibition, he asked if I'd like to paint John. Then a sitting became impossible with the worsening of John's wife?s illness. Sadly, just before Christmas, Katherine died."
In January, John had his 89th birthday. He had been involved with his major retrospective at the National Gallery of Victoria, then its imminent opening at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. He was also painting new work for an exhibition in March. It was a time of mortal loss, emotional exhaustion and great achievement. At this profoundly complex moment of his life, with great generosity, John sat for me in his studio. The winners of the Wynne Prize and the Archibald will be announced on the 28th of July 2017.

A painting by Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye has sold for $2.1 million, a record for the highest auction price for an Australian female artist.
A painting by the late Aboriginal artist Emily Kame Kngwarreye has sold for $2.1 million, marking a new record for the highest price achieved at auction for an Australian female artist.
Her contemporary painting, Earth's Creation I, was sold on Thursday night to art dealer Tim Olsen, who recently set up a gallery in New York.
The painting has an impressive exhibition record. It has been shown at the National Gallery Japan, National Museum of Osaka and the Venice Biennale, National Museum of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW and the National Gallery of Victoria.
Fine Art Bourse and CooeeArt Marketplace organised the online auction, which had to be postponed when a server crashed as thousands of people worldwide tried to log in to watch the sale.
