In the heart of the South Australian outback, along the remote Stuart Highway, lies Coober Pedy, originally named after the Aboriginal phrase, Kupa Piti. This unique subterranean community was established following the first discovery of opals in 1915. Miners, migrants, fortune seekers, nomads, and social and psychological escapees still make their way here to seek their destinies in a landscape of hidden riches. Due to the extreme desert climate, where summer temperatures can exceed 40°C and winter nights fall below freezing, much of the town’s life and infrastructure is built underground in hand-dug subterranean homes. Photographer Tim Georgeson journeyed into this isolated frontier to record the haunting essence of the opal capital; a world where the human spirit finds shelter, solitude, and sometimes fortune, in a landscape that remains untamed.
