Paul Davies: Tim Olsen pop-up gallery. A Sydney artist and quintessentially Sydney gallerist in Melbourne? Seems so, and it could just be the start. Olsen has hired Christine Abrahams’ former premises in Richmond as a month-long satellite gallery, opening with the Davies show which, given it sold out entirely before opening, will be largely a branding exercise, followed by Guy Maestri in November. Olsen says the move was driven by demand for Davies’ work – a cross between Melburnian Howard Arkley and a technical drawing textbook (on acid) – down south, coupled with the artist’s unwillingness to break in a new dealer. It’s a toe in the water for Olsen, who says his Melbourne audience has been building steadily via his Melbourne Art Fair appearances.
