Some like to go fishing, some like to have an aquarium and others, like New York based artist Dirk Westphal, turn their love of fish into an art form.
Westphal's show features mural-sized photos of fish, reflecting the artist's interest in collecting and studying our finned friends. He's developed a method of lighting fish in their tanks that makes the water surrounding the subjects invisible. The final prints are embedded in acrylic to give them the reflective sheen of water and highlight the intricate detail of the fish against a brilliant white background. This dramatic change in scale makes the viewer feel as if they are inside the tank with the fish.
