GEORGE BYRNE | ARTIST PROFILE
Artist ProfileFebruary 2019
LA-based Australian artist George Byrne creates photographic abstractions of urban geometry. Through his cubist approach to form and line, Byrne reassembles the American cityscape into ascetic compilations of colour and shape. Artist Profile caught up with the artist while he was in Sydney for his show "Post Truth" at Olsen Gallery.

On Friday 1st of Feburary Jacqui Stockdale was a guest artist at the MCA Art Bar.
Lara Merrett had curated a vibrant, artist-driven evening of art, music and performance.
The evening was called Things We Do Together - "all about community and coming together with your fellow neighbour. Grab the opportunity to be a part of a performance - collect a lock or key at the door and find your other half throughout the night."
Jacqui Stockdale cut silhouettes freehand with scissors, in the traditional portrait style that was very popular before photography was invented. The audience was enticed to sit for 10 minutes to have their profile rendered out of a piece of black paper. Each portrait will be added to the collection of heads and displayed in the pop-up studio as part of the performance.
UNSW alumni Olsen and Ormandy stepping forward as the artists they are
UNSW, Art & Design9 January 2019
Louise Olsen recalls drawing with lipsticks during one of her first art classes as a young child.
Her parents, award-winning painter John Olsen and artist Valerie Strong, ran The Bakery Art School in Paddington, and Louise remembers attending the “quite exuberant” life drawing classes.
“I remember in one class, my dad said, ‘Look at this kid’s drawing’ and I was feeling so proud of myself because there were all of these big students, all drawing around me,” the UNSW alumna and Dinosaur Designs co-creator says.

Summer 2018-19
The oozing amoebic forms, fashioned from resin, that have become signature pieces from Sydney's Dinosaur Designs since the mid-1980s, always seemed to signal a desire to transform into something else. As have their City Art Institute-trained creators, Louise Olsen and Stephen Ormandy, who established the iconic brand with Liane Rossler in 1985. Now the pair's lesser-known artistic oeuvre, drawn from a shared 30-year studio practice and on display at the Newscastle Art Gallery until 17 February 2019, reveals a modernith aesthetic as seemingly simple and slippery as those early resin forms, moving from intimate and ethereal studies in watercolour and oil (Olsen) to tumescent totemic sculpture and three-dimensional collage (Ormandy).

November 2018Congratulations to Michelle Cawthorn for being selected as a finalist for the 2018 inaugural Splash McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award at McClelland Sculpture Park and Gallery in Victoria.
Held every three years, the inaugural $30,000 Splash: McClelland Contemporary Watercolour Award has been established to showcase Australian artists who work in the medium of watercolour. It is an acquisitive award enabled by the Fornari Bequest, by the Will of the late Lena May Fornari, and is a legacy of her support of the arts in Victoria. Lena May was an ardent collector of watercolours and the first acquisitions through this Bequest were significant watercolour paintings. Continuing this tradition, Splash presents the work of contemporary Australian artists who use this medium in highly accomplished and innovative ways:
The Award will be judged by Linda Michael, independent curator and editor, with one highly commended work judged by Samantha Comte, Curator, The Ian Potter Museum of Art, University of Melbourne.
