I spoke to the artist in Clovelly, reclining in the glow of a post-coastal walk and swim and on the day he is set to open his show, Post Truth at OLSEN.

Sure, there are plenty of beautiful and famous people roaming the streets of L.A., but have you seen the parking lots in that city? Australian-born, now L.A.-based photographer George Byrne sees plenty of magic in the city’s mundane pit stops. Whether he’s pointing his camera at a brightly-painted emergency door or an old petrol station, George’s snaps prove just how photogenic bricks and concrete can be.

Where California oasis meets the daily downtown daydream. Sydney-born, L.A.-based artist George Byrne showcases his new exhibition, Post Truth, at The Olsen Gallery, Woollahra. Demonstrating how a relocation to California transformed his unique photographic eye, the exhibition combines his signature captures of urban American landscape, blended with abstract painting techniques. Side by side the two mediums prove electric, a vision of Byrne’s everyday existence where the mundane becomes neon, highlighting how creativity can allow you to fluidly cross the line between reality and fantasy.

Opened in New York’s Nolita neighborhood in March 2017, this gallery is a collaboration between Tim Olsen, a former Sydney-based gallerist, Emerald Gruin and her partner, Adrian, who were previously involved with Rox Gallery that shuttered its Lower East Side space in 2014. Their roster of artists includes some of Australia’s biggest contemporary exports, including TV Moore, George Byrne and Leila Jeffreys, along with American artists such as KOAK. Their venue is also a platform for contemporary Aboriginal artists to reach U.S. markets, and they recently held a group show organized by Adam Knight, vice president of the Aboriginal Art Association of Australia, featuring 15 artists. The gallery is presenting new works by Sydney-born, L.A.-based photographer George Byrne this fall.
