OLSEN GRUIN NEW YORK

Six hard-edged paintings of curvy forms by the Australian artist and designer, who is making his New York solo début, evoke otherworldly figures and landscapes.

Six hard-edged paintings of curvy forms by the Australian artist and designer, who is making his New York solo début, evoke otherworldly figures and landscapes. In “Sunny for Days,” a golden circle marked with a thumbnail of orange—like a sun being eclipsed by a brighter star—hovers above interlocking puzzle-piece shapes in thirteen colors, from fuchsia to royal blue to black. The stolid central figure of “Ole,” reminiscent of an unsorted pile of Matisse paper cuttings, is seen against a background of dark gray. Complementing Ormandy’s sensual but not strictly figurative forms are six dreamy, N.S.F.W. pencil drawings by the Instagram sensation Alphachanneling. (The gallery, an outpost of a Sydney stalwart, is open by appointment only, as it shifts its U.S. headquarters to Orchard St.)
