A PORTRAIT of Arnhem Land singer Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu has won this year's Archibald Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in Sydney.

The artist, Guy Maestri, will take home $50,000 for the prestigious portrait prize.

Gallery director Edmund Capon told The Australian Online he thought the work was " a quiet painting… reflective".

Maestri said his eight previous entries to the Archibald had been rejected.

"I always found it quite a privilege… to be a part of the prize," he said.

There were 708 entries for the Archibald this year.
