George Byrne

Los Angeles based artist George Byrne is best known for large scale photographic works that transform everyday urban surfaces and landscapes into painterly abstractions. His practice draws on the visual language of modernist painting and the conceptual legacy of the New Topographics movement.

Since 2015, Byrne has exhibited widely in the United States and internationally. His work has been featured in The Guardian, The Observer, ICON Magazine, PPAPER, The British Journal of Photography, Aesthetica, and The Harvard Review. His monograph Post Truth is now in its third edition and is distributed internationally in English and French through Hachette Publishing.

In 2024, Byrne launched Synthetica, his fifth major body of work, which combines analog photography with digital collage. The series has toured internationally, with exhibitions in Sydney, Toronto, Oslo, and across Europe throughout 2025 and 2026.

In December 2025, Byrne will debut his first two paintings with Olsen Gallery as part of the group exhibition Summer Curated, marking an expansion of his practice into painting. The works belong to an evolving series and reflect an intuitive, materially driven abstract approach, using oil paint, pastel, and charcoal.

Born in Sydney, Byrne graduated from the Sydney College of the Arts in 2001 and has lived and worked in Los Angeles since 2011.
