Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri

 
Joseph Jurra Tjapaltjarri is a respected ceremonial and community leader of the Pintupi, and former Chairman of Papunya Tula Artists, a position he first held in 1999. Born in the pre-European era in the area of Kiwirrkura, he was approaching his teens when his family were first located by one of Jeremy Long’s Northern Territory Welfare patrols, and encouraged to move into Papunya in the early 1960’s. He commenced painting for Papunya Tula Artists in 1986 and is represented in numerous Australian and international collections, including the Institute of Contemporary Art, Chicago and The Harvard Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts.
