James Coe

James Coe is a contemporary Sydney-based artist known for his imaginative use of color and texture. Influenced by the natural world and human experience, his works transform everyday subjects into vibrant, multi-layered compositions. Coe’s art most often depicts natural landscapes, architecture/ interiors and figuration, employing bold palettes and textural mark-making to evoke emotion and invite viewers into a deeper exploration of the connection and interplay between nature and imagination.

Coe’s work reflects his exploration of imaginative, multi-layered colours and intentional textural effects. His work eludes to direct references of a subject, however, emphasising figurative entropy to evoke sensation and emotion. With an inventive and vibrant palette, Coe seeks to connect deeply with viewers, using abstract mark-making techniques within the work to shift focus away from detail. This approach invites a more profound understanding of typically overlooked aspects of everyday life, turning the ordinary into something dynamic and meaningful.
