The Queensland Art Gallery currently has a exhibition of Fred Williams' paintings and prints on show until March 2014. 'Fred Williams: Painter, Printmaker' features etchings and aquatints works from his music hall series produced in London when Williams frequented various theatres and performances in the winters, in order to seek refuge from the cold winters in the warm, heated spaces. During his visits, Williams would draw in a sketch pad and also directly onto copper etching plates. Olsen Irwin currently have two works from this series available for sale 'Trampoline' and 'Music Hall'. Also featured at the Queensland Art Gallery are works from Williams' Sherbrooke Forest series. "Following his return to Australia in 1957, and strongly influenced by the post-impressionists and C?zanne in particular, Fred Williams began to create images exploring the symmetry and spatial ambiguities of stands of eucalypt saplings. This resulted in an increasingly abstracted series of watercolours, paintings and prints of trees in Sherbrooke Forest in the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne, made during the next four years." - Art Gallery of New South Wales. Olsen Irwin also have available works from this series - these can be viewed here on our website. Fred Williams' etchings also feature in our summer survey exhibition, 'Regroup- Works under $5000' at our Queen Street gallery.
