OLSEN Gallery would like to congratulate George Byrne as the winner of this year's Head On Photo Festival's Landscape NSW Award. Byrne's winning photograph Murwillumbah #1 was taken whilst the artist was in residency on the far north coast of New South Wales in 2016.

"As an artist in residence in December 2016 at a hotel on Cabarita Beach on New South Wales's far north coast. I was struck by the region's raw beauty and moved by the spirituality of Mount Warning as an ancient epicentre of indigenous life. The Calleen Art Award is an acquisitive national painting prize in any subject and style. 2017 marks the 40 year anniversary for the Calleen Art Award and during the past ten years it has developed a unique reputation as a major art prize in regional New South Wales. "Hello, my lovelies, you are still here," the artist John Olsen exclaims as if approaching old friends.  On the wall of the Art Gallery of NSW are a series of oils painted in the early 1960s from which the new retrospective, John Olsen: the you beaut country, borrows its laconic title.

ARTISTS often talk about their studios as locations of solitude and retreat. But John Olsen's beautiful Southern Highlands workspace took on an even deeper dimension late last year.

John Olsen is one of Australia's greatest artists, with works across multiple mediums produced over nearly seven decades.

The John Olsen: You Beaut Country exhibition features some of his most iconic and arresting works, including large-scale paintings of Sydney Harbour and Lake Eyre as well as his career-defining landscape series.
He spoke with Wendy Harmer about his excitement for this exhibition and his journey as an artist. From being an 'outrageous' younger man, to his quest for perfection and how his best is yet to come.

His story has been told numerous times across media – often with just a lingering hint of incredulity. Julian Meagher completed a medical degree before embarking on a career as a painter. Though in truth his interest in art never waned, somehow finding time to undertake a classical education in portrait painting at Charles H Cecil Studios in Florence, midway through his medical studies.

Best known in recent years for her distinctive flower paintings, this year Sydney artist Laura Jones explores emotive new territory.

With an urge to learn more about the Great Barrier Reef's devastating mass bleaching event of 2016, Laura sought out a residency on Lizard Island, and then more recently on Heron Island. Painting in close proximity to the reef, and meeting the dedicated scientists who study it, has inspired a spectacular new series of paintings for Laura.

We talked with Laura ahead of her upcoming exhibition ‘Bleached‘ at Olsen Gallery in Sydney, opening mid-May.

Today we highlight the latest exhibition by Sydney artist Julian Meagher, which opens tomorrow at Olsen Gallery.

‘There is Hope to the Last Flower' confronts poignant issues, from the global to the personal, through unique compositions and unexpected, yet somehow beautiful symbols. Though they are depicted in a cool, muted palette, Julian's artworks are underpinned with luminous optimism.

Interview with Alan Jones. Alan Jones’ work crosses over painting, sculpture and collage. His most recent show was of exquisite painted wooden collages, many of which depicted the coastal landscape of Moonee Beach in NSW.

A 40-year-old from Canberra, Timothy Vernon Moore is one of the stars of the imminent Sydney Biennale, ?You imagine what you desire? (21/03 - 9/06), with a retrospective at the Campbelltown Art Centre. Despite the fact that he has lived in New York for some time, Australia remains one of his points of reference. 

Sydney art dealer Tim Olsen is about to open the doors on one of his most ambitious projects yet: his own gallery in the thick of New York's cut-throat contemporary art gallery scene.

Located on Elizabeth Street in Soho's established gallery enclave, Olsen told PS he was confident the move would be a success, with a long list of Australian and international artists set to grace its walls.

ABOUT a year ago, iconic Australian artist John Olsen agreed to create an iconic painting that would capture the essence of his birthplace. 

It was a deeply personal work, a reflection on his beginnings. 

Unfortunately, illness meant he couldn’t be there when the exhibition opened in November last year. 

But on Saturday at Newcastle Art Gallery – just a short distance from his childhood home – Olsen got to share a piece of that work, a slice of the Hunter, with hundreds of other art lovers.

"This is great," he gushes. "I've seen your work for ages and ages. I want to stand here and just go 'Wow', it's so gorgeous'."
